EAB
Emerald Ash Borer Update
The Emerald Ash Borer Beetle remains a threat in our area and tree professionals are working hard to get ahead of what has shown to be imminent and significant tree loss for our native Green Ash tree. Managing the problem is being diligent with removing Green Ash trees as well as treating them. Spreading the problem out rather than waiting for it to become overwhelming is the best plan. Diversifying new plantings by choosing many varieties is the best way to set up the urban forests for success rather than repeating the mistakes of having only one species being threatened all at once.
As we work our way into warmer, dryer weather, the Forestry staff is focusing on Green Ash tree removals to keep momentum on our EAB response plan. You may notice some tree rows taken down in areas where they border homeowners or neighboring properties. These are trees that do not meet the criteria for treatment. In the event of EAB infestation, these trees will be deleted before they become unpredictable and difficult to remove. Our staff will continue our mission to treat the desirable Green Ash trees that have been valuable mainstays to our park system. North Elmwood park and Rendezvous park removals have been completed to keep current with our 2025 removal goals.
Regarding treatments for this spring through fall season, forestry staff will focus our efforts on South Elmwood ball complex. You may see some removals happen in select areas as we prepare to re-forest our beautiful South Elmwood Park.
If you have any questions about EAB and treatments, reach out to your local tree professionals and you can always contact the West Fargo Park District Forestry Department.
